“On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”
Hunter S. Thompson
I like to imagine that my love affair with music began before I did because it was my destiny. However, some might say it started when I was about 4 years old and discovered my late grandmother's vintage record player that stood 100 feet above me. Music has captured every simple and good memory I have of my childhood and continued with me through today, Still, it keeps more than just my memories. It isn't just some part of my everyday life, my entire life is a love letter to music.
I believe music is the ultimate source. It is God and the universe and all the powers that be. It is magic and likely the only thing humans have gotten completely right. This inspires me to make sure other people recognize it too. That motivation lends itself to the job. I grew up in a bubble of music, glued to the radio, sneaking in as many concerts as possible, and driving aimlessly with the windows down to spend time with music. It was an inevitable turn of fate that I would end up working in music.
Of course I can’t tell you the exact moment that I decided that music was life, but I do know that every happy memory I have of my family together, unfractured, unencumbered, and intact, involves music. What better way to think of life than to remember everyone you love happily enveloped in the perfect song? It was only natural that I would turn it into a career.
I’ve worked at 106.7 KROQ (or in radio) for nearly my entire adult life and it has guided me through many experiences that I could never have ever imagined. My job is not perfect, and there are things I love and hate about it because a job is a job, but knowing that I impact the room every once in a while by sprinkling music around like fairy dust, well how could I ever be mad at that?
Although part of what I do is influence I do not set out to be an influencer or someone who claims to know it all. I hate being told that I am a brand. I am simply a person who has fallen so deeply in love with music that no love on Earth could ever compare. Music informs every choice I have ever made and it is because of music that I experience life so vividly and deeply. I live better because of a song that pierces my heart and my existence. I hope that what distinguishes me is how I interpret the human experience and all the playlists that go with it. As for where I am headed, that depends on where the next song leads.
I hear music in a different way than most people and because of that, I can speak for it and I hope to do it justice, and just so you know, dear reader, my greatest achievement has been staying in a loving and committed relationship with music for the entirety of my life thus far. My next great achievement will be making it to the end, still as in love with it as ever.
